Gov’t arrests soldiers in connection to attack against peace monitors

December 24th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government have arrested soldiers in connection to the last week’s attack against peace monitors near the country’s capital Juba, the Eye Radio reported quoting foreign ministry spokesman.

Last week, South Sudan army attacked and detained members of the peace monitoring body, the Cease-fire and Transition Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) forcing a female Ethiopian officer to walk naked.

The individuals consisting of three international observers and one driver, were reportedly blindfolded and handcuffed, kicked and stripped of their clothing forcing the IGAD and United Nations Mission in South Sudan, including the government of Kenya issuing statements to condemn the attack.

In a statement to the independent Eye Radio, South Sudan Foreign  Ministry Spokesman Mawen Makol said the perpetrators were immediately arrested and a investigation ongoing.

“The alleged perpetrators were arrested immediately and an investigation launched,” Makol, told Eye Radio.

Mawen who did not not state how many the perpetrators were said their findings would be shared with the regional body, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states.

“This is something that the government wants to make sure that nobody can just go out and do crime,” Makol further told the Eye Radio.
