November 20th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has released $40 million for the National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC), presidential advisor on security and chairman of the peace implementing body, Tutkew Gatluak, said.
South Sudan government and opposition groups last year signed a peace agreement to end the ongoing civil war. The parties were required by the agreement to form a unity government in May.
Because conditions set forth for the government formation were not in place, the parties agreed in May to extend the pre-transitional period for six months to enable for the implementation of the remaining pre-transitional tasks.
The NPTC said in the past that it lacks money for the implementation of the security arrangements. Forces in cantonment sites have been leaving their camps because of hunger according to the R-JMEC.
The government had in May pledged to pay $100 million for peace implementation, but much of those money haven’t been paid and President Salva Kiir said early this month that he will pay the money needed for the peace activities.
Speaking to reporters in Juba on Tuesday, Gatluak said the government has released $40 million for the implementation of the security arrangements and that the money was deposed in the NPTC account.
“Today the President had $40 million wired into the account of NPTC to support the work of the body, and this money is meant to allow us to implement what we didn’t implement in the past,” Gatluak said.
