July 4th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The main armed opposition faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) under the leadership of the country’s former First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon has accused government intelligence and security service of working to derail peace efforts in the country.
In a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia on Wednesday, the group said government security operatives deployed by the First Vice President Taban Deng Gai and the country’s Minister of National Security Service Obote Mamur in the country’s Upper Nile and Equatoria are waging a counter-insurgency to cause fighting with the intention of shifting the blame on peace violation to the SPLM-IO.
“It has also come to the attention of the Movement’s intelligence that private militias of Gen. Isaac Obotu Mamur and Gen.Taban Deng are conducting counter-insurgency operations in the states of Greater Equatoria and Greater Upper Nile, with the intention of apportioning responsibility to the people’s Movement” the statement partly read.
The group reiterated the movement’s adherence to the recently declared ceasefire agreement signed last week by Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum in an effort brokered by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
“The SPLM/SPLA (IO) has been observing the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoH) and has only been engaging the regimes forces in self-defense,” The statement signed by the group’s Chairman of National Committee for Information and Public Relations further said.
