May 26th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s armed opposition leader Gen. Peter Gatdet Yaka who is leading an armed rebellion against the government of Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit has called for calm among two Nuer subsections of the Bul and Dok Nuer who came into fighting last week.

Speaking to the Nyamilepedia on Thursday, Col. Gatkuoth Mut Turoah, Gatdet’s spokesman said his movement under the former SPLA-IO General is calling for calm saying there is hard time lying ahead of the two communities.

“We want the two communities to be calm, there is hard time ahead of us and that is why we shouldn’t focus on our differences. We have to over step them and move ahead,” he said.

Members of the Bul-Nuer and Dok-Nuer fought last week after the two disagreed over football-related issue leading to some deaths from and casualties between the two feuding clans.

Kakuma, a Kenyan refugee camp mostly populated by South Sudanese refugees since decades ago, has been one of the safest haven for South Sudanese refugees fleeing both Sudanese civil wars and the South Sudanese civil war which broke out in December 2013.

South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 after forces loyal to the country’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and his then Governor of Northern Bahr Al-Ghazal State Gen. Paul Malong Awan went door-to-door in the capital Juba killing civilians belonging to the Nuer ethnic group sparking a nation-wide protests from top army generals from the Nuer leading to a civil war.

A peace agreement signed in August 2015 by President Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar and negotiated under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union (AU) in presence of Troika and other international observers collapsed in July 2016 following fighting at the presidential palace in Juba “J1” reportedly after President Kiir ordered a failed attempt to arrest the SPLM-IO leader Riek Machar.

A peace revitalization process ended without a formal agreement between warring parties last week in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa after the regional mediated presented a peace proposal that seek to share power between different warring parties.
