December 13th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The South Sudan United Movement and Army (SSUM/A) led by Gen. Peter Gatdet Yaka said on Thursday that SPLA-IO forces in Unity state had attacked their forces in Kaikang near Mayom last night.
The claim by Gatdet’s movement came shortly after an SPLA-IO officer told the Nyamilepedia that Gatdet’s forces had attacked them in a place near the Sudanese border overnight.
In a press Staten extended to the Nyamilepedia on Thursday, the military spokesman of the SSUM/A Brig. Gen. Wichjang Duop said troops loyal to Machar attacked them in the early hours of Thursday.
“The militias identified as loyal to SPLA – IO under the leadership of Dr. Riek Machar launched a fresh attacks against South Sudan United Army Force (SSUAF) Military base in Kaikang 1, North of Unity State this morning around 4:37: 00 AM,” he said in the statement extended to the Nyamilepedia.
He said their troops reined shortly before the attacking forces could step in the Kaikang offensive.
“On their way to SSUAF Military base, they were ambushed by our gallant forces and were expelled back with many casualties from the side of the attackers.”
He said a senior SPLA-IO officer was arrested during the fighting along with his two body guards. He further urged the international community to come in and hold responsible those who waged the violation of the ceasefire agreement.
“One of the officer who say to be Maj.General Stephen Tang Diew with his two bodyguards were captured during the war,” Wichjang said. “We are informing the International Community, IGAD and CTSAMVM to quickly investigate and verify the clear violation planned by aformemetion militias on the CoHA signed by the parties last year.”
The military spokesman further reiterated his movement’s commitment to the agreement signed in September and the permanent ceasefire agreement signed by the parties in June.
“We abid by the agreement of the cessation of hostilities and fully committed to its implementation,” he said adding that “SSUAF is alert on the implementation phase of agreement signed on 12 September 2018 in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.”
