Oct 10, 2021 — South Sudan First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny and the Sudanese Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Prof. Yassir Abbas, met on Wednesday to discuss how the two countries can cooperate on finding solutions to the current floods in both countries and its long-term impacts.
According to the office of the First Vice President, the meeting which was also attended by the South Sudan Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Hon. Manawa Peter Gatkuoth, explored ways of limiting the effects of the flooding in South Sudan.
“Wednesday, 6 October, 2021 – His Excellency Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan received and held a meeting in his is office with the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources of the Republic of Sudan, Hon. Prof. Yassir Abbas and his accompanying delegation.” FVP Press Unit announced.
“The meeting discussed ways of cooperation between the two sisterly countries in the area of water resources and irrigation and the flooding situation in South Sudan.” They added.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Hon. Manawa Peter Gatkuoth, reiterated that the meeting discussed “means of enhancing the technical cooperation between his ministry and its Sudanese counterpart, and to explore ways of limiting the effects of the flooding in South Sudan.”
Manawa also announced that the Sudanese Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources of Sudan has pledged to implement one of the water projects in South Sudan and also to provide training to personnel of his ministry.
The Sudan’s visiting Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources expressed his Government’s readiness to provide any necessary assistance in reducing the impact of the floods in South Sudan.
