August 6th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Fierce fighting has broke out between armed civilians and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in South Sudan’s former Lakes state region according to several state government officials.
The fighting came as a contingent of SPLA disarmament force came under a deadly ambush in Pagor County in Gok state leading to the death of five soldiers and none from the side of the armed civilians.
According to the information minister John Madol, the armed civilians ambushed the army on Saturday killing five soldiers before withdrawing from their initial cattle camp and then they were followed by the army on Sunday.
“Two days ago the disarmament forces went to Duany and Pagor Counties of Gok State to disarmed the armed civil population…before they reach there, they fall into ambush in a cattle camp called Ameth Machar,” the information minister told the Eye Radio.
However, despite reports of continued fighting between the SPLA and the armed civilians, the information minister said calm has returned to the areas after the armed youth withdrew from their camp pointing out that reinforcement is being made to counter the youth.
“As of now there are forces there, there is reinforcement and the armed youth moved out from that cattle camp and the situation is calm,” John Madol further said
