August 1st 2018 (Nyamiepedia) – The former SPLM political detainees and the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) have accepted to sign the peace agreement which was signed by the South Sudan government and the SPLM-IO last month.

In late July, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance and the SPLM former Political Detainees rejected to initialize a proposal presented by the Sudanese mediation on how the parties can share power in South Sudan’s would-be transitional government.

The government, the SPLM-IO and a splinter group let by Gen. Peter Gatdet Yaka signed the agreement.

In an interview with the VOA’s South Sudan in Focus, Deng Alor Kuol, the chief negotiator for the South Sudan’s Former Detainees said they are going to sign the agreement but with reservations which would be bracketed and would be discused later.

“The most important is that all these people are going to sign but with reservations that should be bracketed,” Alore said.

Alor further said the referendum can not be succesfully done within in the 5 months period voicing concerns about the credibility on its outcome because it is the government which is going to be responsible for its conduct.

“Within 5 months you cannot conduct a referendum because who is going to be responsible for that referendum? It is the current government and this is the reason we are saying no, this is not possible,” he further said.

For their part, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance are also signing teh agreement on the same cover that has been used by the former detainees according to sources contacted by the Nyamilepedia.

“Yes, I am informed that they agreed to sign. It’s true my comrade from [the] Sudan embassy [in Juba] who is an attachee had confirm it to me yesterday [that the SSOA will sign the agreement],” the source told the Nyamilepedia from the capital Juba.
