December 7th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Fierce fighting has erupted near Maiwut, residents who reported heavy gunfire have said.
The fighting is between SPLA-IO forces and troops loyal to defected General Ochan Puot who left the group months ago.
“There is fighting since Yesterday between forces belonging to Ochan Puot and those of the [SPLM] IO under Dr. Riek [Machar Teny]. It was very heavy and we could hear the gun,” the resident said from Maiwut town.
A member of the main armed opposition group said General Ochan had attacked a SPLA-IO base in Maiwut County triggering the fighting. No casualties have been reported so far.
“The forces of Ochan Puot who works in the interest of the government of South Sudan have attacked out forces and that is the reason of the fighting,” the official said without giving further details.
