February 6th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Political fighting in the war-torn South Sudan have dramatically declined since the signing of a revitalized peace agreement by the government and opposition groups in September last year, a United Nations envoy have said.

David Shearer, the UN special envoy and head of UN mission in South Sudan said as result of the peace agreement signed by President Kiir and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar last year in Addis Ababa, political fighting has declined except for tribal cattle rustling that has continued to also kill people.

“Since that time (signing of peace) there has been a number of positive things that have happened. Right now, as we speak, opposition members who were once at war [with the government are] now in Juba participating in the peace [process] and moving around without any problem from the government or whatever,” Shearer told a news conference at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

He said the amount of political fighting of the country between the warring parties have demised and only cattle rustling between ethnic communities continues to kill people.

“The amount of fighting in the country have diminished greatly. Political fighting has diminished greatly,” he said.

“[But] there are still cattle rustling and people are being killed through that sort of ethnic violence. But political fighting have dropped dramatically with the exception of South, South Sudan and the Equatoria where Thomas Cirilo’s group have been in conflict with the SSPDF,” he added.
