Fighting erupts in Lainya as army attacks holdout opposition forces – spokesman

May 30th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Fierce fighting has erupted in Central Equatoria’s Lainya ,county after government forces launched “coordinated” attacks against holdout opposition troops according to a rebel spokesman.

Suba Samuel Manase, the spokesperson for National Salvation Front (NAS) led by General Thomas Cirilo was quoted by the Sudan Tribune as saying a government-allied militia belonging to the country’s cabinet affairs minister, Elia Martin Lomoro, attacked their hideout in Lainya and Wonduroba of Central Equatoria last week.

He said fighting in the two areas “continued till the early hours of Monday 27th May 2019.”

He said the holdout opposition group which is not a part of the revitalized peace agreement signed last year by the government and opposition groups “continue[s] to point out that this fighting came as part of the Kiir’s regime strategy to defeat NAS forces militarily in order to force it to surrender to their unrealistic peace agreement.”
