August 14th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Fighting across South Sudan have been decreasing in recent days since the signing of the permanent ceasefire agreement in the Sudanese capital Khartoum by President Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar, the Troika said.
President Salva Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon in June signed a permanent ceasefire agreement in Khartoum, Sudan, and subsequently ordered their forces to cease fighting and remain in their current defensive positions.
Other armed and non-armed groups including the South Sudan Opposition Alliance and teh SPLM-FDs also signed the agreement.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Troika said they have noticed that fighting have been decreasing across the country since the parties signed a permanent ceasefire in Khartoum last June.
“We note that there has been some reduction in fighting, the most serious confidence-building measure of all. Sustained peace is a necessary condition for the legitimacy of a transitional arrangement,” said the join Troika statement.
The join statement also reiterated their call for the regional leaders to uphold the United Nations Security Council arms embargo on South Sudan and on their financial institutions to ensure that the proceeds from corrupt and war-making activities do not flow through their jurisdictions.
The statement further said the world powers expect more declines in the cases of fighting in the country urging the parties to make whatever effort available and allow humanitarian access for aid groups.
“We now expect to see a change in the situation on the ground, beginning with a further significant reduction in violence, and all parties taking measures to allow full humanitarian,” the statement further said.
