July 21st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Family members of a detained South Sudanese journalist have said that National Security Service (NSS) authorities are preventing from meeting with their son who is being detained at the Blue House in Juba.

Michael Christopher, the editor-in-chief of the suspended Al-Watan newspaper who was prevented from leaving the capital Juba last week is being detained at the National Security Service (NSS) headquarters in Juba.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia on Tuesday, a family member who said his name should not be disclosed for security reasons said they have been prevented from meeting Christopher.

The family member said Christopher’s wife was allowed briefly to meet her husband before the NSS officers ordered her and other family members to leave the building.

“They don’t want us to meet him. On Thursday, they allowed his wife to meet him but later on those who went with her to the facility were told to leave including the wife. The meeting took only five minutes,” the family member told the Nyamilepedia on the condition of anonymity.

He said they have not been informed by the authorities why he was detained denying any wrongdoing by Michael whom he said has already apologized for covering the Sudanese protest against the will of the government in Juba.

“He apologized and until now I don’t know why he is being detained. They haven’t tell us any reason for this arbitrary arrest,” the family member added.
