April 30th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Family members of detained South Sudan army officer, General Stephen Buay Rolnyang, has called on President Salva Kiir Mayardiit to rein and help secure his release after almost a year in detention.
General Buay was arrested in May 2018 in Unity state’s Mayom town following a fierce fighting between him and General Matthew Puljang, a militia commander allied to the South Sudan government.
Buay was suspected of defecting to the opposition forces allied to ex-army chief, General Paul Malong Awan, and following his arrest, he was charged with treason and disrespecting orders from the army headquarters in Juba.
Last week, he was acquitted of those charges but the judge decided to put him under further trials on new charges.
“Your Excellency, we are urging your esteemed management to graciously set him( Buay) free from the military custody,” said a letter addressed to President Salva Kiir and seen by the Nyamilepedia.
“Buay served as the commander of 1st, 4th and 5th infantry divisions for some good years in the name of protecting the constitution and the legitimate president who was elected by all sixty-four tribes across the nation and he never rebelled against the SPLM/ SPLA,” the letter added.
