December 3rd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan former army commander, Stephen Buay Rolnyang, who was dismissed from the country’s army last month has said he may appeal at the Supreme Court.
Buay was arrested in Unity state’s Mayom County in May 2018 following fierce fighting between his guards and a well-armed force belong to a militia commander deployed by the government in the area.
He was accused of trying to rebel against the “system” and was sentenced to one year in prison (which has already finished), demoted from Major General to Private and then dismissed from the active army service. He was released last week.
The ex-army deputy commander for 5th infantry division who had the chance to appeal at the army court in Bilpam refused to do so saying the result will end up the same because he said his sentence was unfair given lack of evidence to the charges brought up against him.
Last week, his lawyer was quoted as saying he was preparing to appeal against the verdict. But speaking to Nyamilepedia on Tuesday, Buay said he may appeal at the Supreme Court once he is set to do so but said he wasn’t decided on the matter at the moment.
“[I may appeal at the] Supreme Court but I have not yet decided to appeal,” he told the Nyamilepedia.
