April 26th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Ex-secretary of South Sudan’s vice president James Wani Igga who resigned last month and fled the country has urged President Salva Kiir Mayardiit to reject advise by some prominent political leaders to stay in power and quit the presidency for the sack of peace.
In a letter addressed to president Salva Kiir, David Mayen Dengdit, urged president Kiir to take his advise and “make us proud” of him by leaving the helm.
“Please take it and make us proud of our president who quit for greater good of his country. Maybe, for reasons beyond your intentions, things got out of hand. it is no longer about you as a person.” he said
He told President Salva Kiir that leaving the presidency will add value to his role he served during the liberation of South Sudan when the South was fighting the northern majority Arabs and will make him remembered by South Sudanese as great man.
“That single bold decision to quit,in addition to your greater contribution to the liberation of South Sudan, will make the people remember you as a great man,” he added.
However, President Salva Kiir, while hosting a state funeral for the body of late army Chief James Ajongo Mawut who died in a military hospital in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Friday, said at Dr John Garang De Mabior Mausoleum that he will not resign as demanded by the Opposition Alliance in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 after a militia force loyal to president Salva Kiir and his then Northern Bahr Al-Ghazal Governor Paul Malong Awan went door-to-door to kill Juba residence from the Nuer ethnic group sparking country-wide protests from top army generals from ethnic Nuer leading to civil war.
Thousands of people have been killed in the war and almost half of the country’s 12-million population have been displaced both internally and abroad.
