March 4th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The European Union (EU) has urged the revitalized government to work hard to halt the ongoing inter-communal violence in the country’s Pibor area.
This two weeks after fighting between suspected elements of Lou-Nuer youth and Murle armed men started.
The fighting has displaced thousands of people with many seeking shelter at a UN base in the area.
“The Heads of Mission express deep concern regarding reports of high levels of inter-communal violence in Jonglei, as well as in other parts of South Sudan,” the EU statement said.
“While we appreciate that the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement is largely holding nationwide, this inter-communal violence is causing death, injury, displacement and livelihood loss to thousands of civilians in areas where people have already been suffering from the impact of recent floods and from high levels of severe food insecurity,” it added.
“We urge the R-TGoNU and all relevant stakeholders to redouble efforts to calm the situation through dialogue and mediation, and to facilitate secure access for humanitarian workers so that they can deliver much needed life-saving assistance.”
