May 10th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Ethiopian Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, reportedly prefers the release – from house arrest – of South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

Machar who is currently in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa is under house detention in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and not allowed – reportedly – to visit areas outside the capital.

Speaking to the Nyamilepedia on Friday, an Ethiopian foreign ministry source said Abiy is considering taking unilateral actions in setting free the main armed opposition leader.

“The prime minister sees that the detention of Riek Machar is not necessary because he and other leaders in the opposition have signed peace agreement and we couldn’t conclude that he is waging war,” the source said.

“We couldn’t prove that Machar’s freedom is a threat to the ongoing peace process to which he is an important asset,” the source added.
