Ethiopian Prime Minister turns down AU mediation

Nov 21, 2020(Nyamilepedia) —The Ethiopian peace idol, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, has turned down efforts by the African Union to mediate the crisis in Tigray region that has already displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

Responding to a proposal by the South African President and the Chairman of the African Union, President Cyril Ramaphosa, who formed a three-member team composing of former presidents to mediate the Ethiopian crisis, the Ethiopian Premier responded by downplaying the crisis describing the reporting of it as a “fake news”.

Instead PM Abiy offered to meet the AU Special envoy as individuals and have one-on-one discussion with each of the three members instead of being summoned by the team.

“PM Abiy Ahmed will be meeting the Chairperson’s special envoys to speak with them one on one,” Prime Minister Abiy announced on Twitter today, Saturday Nov 21, 2020.

Abiy reiterates that any news reporting of him meeting a mediating team envoy is a fake news.

“News circulating that the envoys will be traveling to Ethiopia to mediate between the Federal Government and TPLF’s criminal element is fake.” Abiy announced.

The AU leadership attempted to offer to Ethiopia the mediating hand Ethiopia has been offering to countries in conflicts but Abiy wants to do things his way.

On Friday, the South African President appointed the former Mozambican President Joachim Chissano, Liberia’s former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe as the AU Special envoys to Ethiopia but Abiy denounced.

Ethiopia has been in a crisis for almost two weeks as the Ethiopia National Defense Forces battle the Tigray People Liberation Front in northern Tigray which caused massive displacement into Sudan.

Abiy pledges that his administration will protect lives and property, and assured those who are fleeing the country that the government is ready to receive and reintegrate them upon return.

“The Ethiopian government is ready to receive and reintegrate our fellow Ethiopians fleeing to neighboring countries. We vow to our innocent civilians that have fled, to protect their property, enable humanitarian support by the ENDF and guarantee their peace upon return.” Abiy appealed through his twitter handle.
