Ethiopian Prime Minister Escape Grenade Attack in Addis Ababa

June 23rd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed who took office in March this year have escaped and survived a grenade attack at a massive rally in support of his push for political and economic reforms as well as peace agreement with the neighboring Eritrea, the Reuters reported.

Abiy refered to the grenade attack as an attempt by unidentified people to divide a nation whose political uncertainty worried the region after a surprise resignation of Hailamariam Desalegn in March following deadly protests against his government.

The Ethiopian Central Police, according to the Reuters, said six suspects have been arrested and detained by the law enforcement agency. The local media reported that a senior Ethiopian police general, among others, have been arrested an is being investgated for security shortcomings.

“Nine individuals, including the deputy commissioner of Addis Ababa Police Commission, are in custody and under investigation over shortcomings in secuirty,” the state-owned Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation said on Saturday.

Ethiopia is the venue of the South Sudan’s peace process that has been ongoing since 2015 and any political development in the East AFrican country affect the political situation in the young African country.
