September 7th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – A elder brother to South Sudan journalist killed during an attack on Terrain Hotel in July 2016 has called for justice almost two years after the incident.
Gideon Gatdor Manguet said it remains unclear whether with the verdict issued yesterday the government of South Sudan has accepted responsibility for the death of his brother John Gatluak Manguet.
“My first question is, did the Government of South Sudan accept being solely responsible for the death of our brother,” Gideon asked.
He told the Nyamilepedia that he wonders whether the government as accepted responsibility for the death of his brother and whether the verdict is right when the family were involved during the process.
“If the Government has accepted being responsible for the murder, how should they possibly announce the verdict without involving other party in the process in the first place,” he asked.
He said the family of the slain journalist would have been asked whether they would want to get blood compensation or decide what to be done to compensate their son.
“We were under the impression that we would be asked to determine the fate of the perpetrator whether he deserves Death penalty or payable compensation,” he said.
According to the Nuer customary law, if an innocent person is killed and the murder is purely accidental, compensation ranges from 51 head of cattle and above. If the case is purely intentional Killing by firearms, as we all know, the family members of the deceased are compensated with 100 head of cattle.
