July 30th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader and the country’s First Vice-President designate Dr. Riek Machar Teny has formed a committee to reconcile feuding Bul and Leek communities in Sudan, a senior opposition official said.

Last May, fighting between gang groups on streets in Khartoum ignited inter-communal fighting between the two Unity state neighboring communities killing around 20 people.

The Sudanese government is detaining – without judicial process – hundreds of people in relation to this violence.

Peter Dador, a South Sudanese intellectual from the defunct Unity state said a committee from the main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, has been formed to reconcile the two communities.

He said the committee met last Friday with a team from Mayom’s Bul community in Sudan led by Ustaz Paul Liyliy Mathoat and is also expected to do the same meeting with elders from the Leek community.

He said the two sides discussed reconciliation and peaceful co-existence between the two communities and agreed to convene another meeting that would bring together the two communities.

Peace and reconciliation committee of Lich Intellectuals Forum of SPLM-IO under Co-chair Eng. Farouk Gatkuoth Kam has concluded a fruitful meeting on Friday 26th of July with Mayom County Elders Committee headed by prominent leader Ustaz Lieyliy Mathout,” Dador said.

The purpose of [the] meeting was to find ways and solutions in resolving the dispute that happened between the youth of Rubkotna and Mayom Counties early in May, 2019 in Khartoum. It was agreed that similar meeting will be held soon with Elders of Rubkotna County,” Dador added.

For his part,  the SPLM-IO director of information, Puok Both Baluang confirmed that Machar formed the committee.
