Dr. Machar says encouraging women’s participation in the SPLM-IO increase chances of winning elections.

Juba, South Sudan

December 13, 2021 — South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny has said considering women in decision making positions of the party boosts possibility of winning the race during elections.

He said women constitutes at least 59% of the country’s population and therefore, prioritizing them will prove beneficial the party during the upcoming elections in 2023.

Speaking during the launch of the SPLM-IO General Secretariat on Saturday, the first vice president said if you guarantee a good number of females in the political party it definitely means you are securing high chances for you to win elections.

“If you ensure the percentage of women’s participation in large number, or rather if you do this, you will definitely increase your chances of winning the elections”,Dr. Machar said during launch of the SPLM-IO General Secretariat on Saturday.

Dr. Riek Machar encouraged females to join politics and should not view it as business of males only since it’s an open field to all irrespective of gender, ethnicity and religious affiliations.

The leadership of the SPLM-IO has nominated at least one woman as state governor, two women as National Ministers as a gesture of observing the principle of “affirmative action” stipulated in the 2018 Revitalized Agreement as well as the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan.
