March 11, 2017(Nyamilepedia) —– South Sudan’s former Vice President, and the leader of the main armed opposition party, SPLM/A(IO), has met the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General to Sudan and South Sudan on March 9th, 2017 in South Africa.

According to Dr. Machar’s statement, which he shared with his fans on social media, they discussed ways on how to initiate a political process for settlement of the conflict in South Sudan.

“I met Mr. Nicholas Haysom, the Special Envoy of the UN SECRETARY GENERAL to Sudan and South Sudan on 9 March 2017. We discussed ways for initiating a political process for settlement of conflict in South Sudan.” Dr. Machar states.

Machar’s meeting with the Special Envoy came a day before a political national day of prayers was convened in South Sudanese capital, Juba, by President Salva Kiir, and just a day after the new UN SG announced that the risk of genocide in South Sudan was diminishing.

Machar, who has remained here in South African since late last year, has made a few appearances on international media like BBC Hard Talks, Kenyan and Nigeria radio and TV stations, however, he hasn’t travel or met with many officials leaving doubts if the South African government has placed restrictions on his political activities.

Despite, the leader of the opposition has remained very active and influential in South Sudan politics.

Machar has appointed and relieved many politicians and  promoted military generals in SPLM/A-IO within the last 5 months.
