Dr. Machar meets RJMEC Chairperson, discussed peace implementation in length

Sep 19, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan’s First Vice President, Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/A in Opposition, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, met the new Chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC), Lt. General Charles Tai Gituai, in the capital, Juba.

According to the office of the First Vice President, the R-JMEC and Dr. Machar discussed the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement in South Sudan.

“First Vice President, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny and the Interim Chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC), General Charles Tai Gituai, today discussed the implementation of the peace agreement in South Sudan.” Read part part of the statement from Dr. Machar’s Press Secretary office.

“R-JMEC is tasked to oversee the implementation of the agreement and reports directly to IGAD.” Dr. Machar’s press unit reiterates.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Lt. Gen Gituai confirmed that they discussed implementation fo the revitalized peace agreement in depth.

“The time now is two years since the signing of the revitalized agreement on the resolution of the conflict in South Sudan. So, we have been going around meeting the senior leadership so that they can brief us on the progress, what so far has been achieved and what are the programs for the future towards the implementation of this agreement,” Lt. Gen. Gituai said .

Lt. Gen. Gitua explained that he and Machar discussed the issues of the governance and particularly the power sharing responsibilities at the state and county levels.

“So this afternoon we had a lengthy discussion with His Excellency [the First Vice President] particularly on the issues of the governance. We have discuss the issues of the chairing of responsibilities at the level of the states and the chairing of the positions at the level of the counties as well,” He added.

The Kenyan senior military general further reiterated that they discussed issues of security arrangements and how the training of the troops should be conducted.

“We also discussed as well the issue of the chapter two which is the security arrangements and how the training of the troops and how they are going to be trained, looking at the training itself, how it is established and how they conduct this training and how the management of the training,” Lt. Gen. Gituai said.

Among other protocols, the two leaders also discussed the issue of DDR for those who will be screened out from the army, and also discussed issues related to economic reforms and public finance management.

The new R-JMEC chairperson, Maj. Gen. Charles Tai Gituai, served as the Deputy Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in charge of Operations and Plans.

In this position, the Kenyan military general will oversee the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, a position that was once held by the former Botswana’s President Festus Gontebanye Mogae and Amb. Lt. Gen. Augostino Njoroge, who served as the interim Chairman of the RJMEC from May to August, 2020.
