September 25, 2021— The former national minister of road, Hon. Rebecca Joshua Okwuaci, has been nominated by the SPLM leadership to serve as the party chief whip in the national parliament.
The decision came after the meeting of the SPLM members of parliament who unanimously agreed that Joshua is the right person to represent the ruling party’s interest in the Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly.
In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia, one of the SPLM Cadres, Meen Gabriel congratulated and welcomed the appointment of Joshua by the party leadership.
“Congratulations to you Mama comrade Hon. Rebecca Okwachi for winning the trust of the SPLM leadership and SPLM Women; to be the SPLM Chief-whip in the R-Transtional National Legislative Assembly”,he stated on his Facebook.
Meen said the fact that Joshua has been patient and loyal to the party leadership is what made her to win the conference and trust of the ruling Party as Chief-Whip in the R-TNLA.
“Political Patience, loyalty, honesty, integrity, credibility together with my Godmother Rt.Hon speaker are the result of your Assignment in our Party SPLM and country at large”,Meen added.
Rebecca Joshua Okwaci is a journalist by profession and the secretary general of Women Action for Development (WAD) in South Sudan.
As a peace advocate, Okwaci co-led the Sudanese delegation to the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in 1995 and facilitated dialogue between women from the south and north.
Her progressive work to bring the groups together was recognized by international institutions and governments and culminated in the founding of the Sudanese Women’s Empowerment for Peace (SuWEP), an organization included in the list of 1,000 women nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
She is also a founding member of the Sudanese Women’s Association in Nairobi and Sudanese Women’s Voice for Peace (SWVP), the first grassroots peace organization established by Sudanese women living in exile in Kenya. She also co-led the Sudanese women’s delegation to The Hague Appeal for Peace in 1999.
With SWVP, Okwaci carried out the first peace-building and conflict resolution programs and training in the Shilluk Kingdom in Mid-West Upper Nile in what is now South Sudan.
Joshua is a wife to Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin who is very critical critic to SPLM leadership under President Kiir. Joshua and her husband shares different political perspectives in South Sudan politics.
