Khartoum, Sudan
January 4, 2022-–Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok relinquished his position as country’s top civilian leader over weekend.
This comes six weeks after Hamdok was reinstated to his position following the pact they had reached with military component.
In a televised decree to the nation, Homdok said a roundtable discussion was necessary to provide a new agreement for Sudan’s political transition.
“I decided to give back the responsibility and announce my resignation as prime minister, and give a chance to another man or woman of this noble country to … help it pass through what’s left of the transitional period to a civilian democratic country,” Dr. Abdallah Hamdok said in a televised address.
On 25th of October 2021, Hamdok was overthrown by military component of the Sudan Sovereign Council led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
But his ousting sparked a nationwide unrest in which more citizens took to the streets demanding the reinstatement of Hamdok and urged Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to step aside.
Gen. Abdel Fattah promised that the country will hold free and fair elections by 2023 where all members, who took part in this transitional period will not take part in general elections.
