October 21st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar said on Sunday that citizens displaced by the ongoing civil war won’t return if there would be no unified arm and police in place.

This – Machar said – is because the IDPs would fear that they won’t be protected and if they decided to return, their lives would be at risk.

IDPs will not come back if they don’t see the new army, national police,” Machar said.

It is now more than a year since we signed the agreement. They are aware there is peace but without security there is no peace. This morning when we were briefed I said we need to extend,” Machar added.

Machar who was speaking before a meeting with a UN delegation in Juba on Sunday is opposed to unity government formation on November 12th, a deadline his main rival Salva Kiir said he will not miss.

Machar said he wants security arrangements such as the establishment of a unified army, police in place before any government is formed.
