Deputy South Sudan central bank governor dies of COVID-19 in Kenya

June 10, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s first deputy of the country’s central bank has died in the Kenyan capital Nairobi of the novel coronavirus days after he was evacuated from South Sudan’s capital Juba, officials said.

Maror Chier Rehan – one official said from Juba – was airlifted from Juba about a week ago and had been treated at a local clinic in Juba where his situation got worse and then evacuated to Nairobi.

“He was initially treated here for coronavirus and after the treatment become unpromising, he was then transferred to Nairobi but died yesterday,” the official told Nyamilepedia from Juba.

Separately, Majok Nicodemus, the director of communication at the Bank of South Sudan, confirmed the demise of the first deputy governor but could not confirms whether Rehan who was in his 70s died of COVID-19, the respiratory sickness caused by coronavirus.

“The first deputy of governor of Bank of South Sudan died in Nairobi yesterday (Tuesday) at 11 PM because of a short illness. The cause of death will come later in an official statement when the body arrives,” Nicodemus said today.
