August 12, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – Traditional chiefs and community leaders in South Sudan’s Tonj East County are calling on President Salva Kiir Mayardit to remove the army’s director of intelligence, General Ring Tueny, who is overseeing the violent disarmament campaign in the area.

Fighting broke out between the army and armed civilians in Tonj on Monday killing at least 127 people, according to the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) spokesperson Major General Lul Ruai Koang.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia this evening, a local official in Tonj said the fighting was a result of the army brutality against locals adding that it was a direct failure of those doing the disarmament.

“The fighting broke out because the soldiers who were making the disarmament were terrorizing our people. And this is the failure of the concerned commanders who are responsible for the disarmament campaign,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

The official revealed that traditional leaders from different counties in Warrap state have signed a letter asking President Salva Kiir Mayardit to dismiss the intelligence chief over the crime allegedly carried out by forces of the SSPDF.

“Many chief and community leaders have written to President Kiir to remove and take Ring Tueny to justice,” he said.
