June 13, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — A cattle raid in South Sudan’s Lafon County of Eastern Equatoria State has left at least two people dead.
According to Lafon youth union chairperson Paul Ukach, who spoke to Nyamilepedia, the incident occurred on June 8th, 2020 at Pacidi payam and Lwala Boma
The youth union leadership explained that the cattle raiders killed one person during the attack.
“We, the Lafon County Youth Union hereby condemn the barbaric and perversion behaviors of the cattle raiders who are still practicing 16th century activities of stealing cattle.” Said Paul Ukach, the chairperson of the Youth Union.
The incident, according to the Lafon County Youth Union, happened in the afternoon between 12 pm and 1pm and no serious battle was sustained.
“In the process they managed to kill one person called Udou and another person (the son of Abuamoi) narrowly escaped death. He ran and informed the people what happened and the youth and wegi-pach immediately followed the cattle raiders.” He said.
The youth union confirmed that at least one cattle raider was killed and all the cattle were recovered
“Fortunately the Lafon people followed them and they were caught in a place called Libianga at river Atondi around 4: 00 pm. One person among the cattle raider was gun down too in process of retrieving cattle at their hand.” the youth leadership explained.
“They left the cattle and ran away after losing the battle. The Lafon people identified the dead body with some mark, allegedly to be from Boya.” He continued.
Lafon County youth union calls on the government of South Sudan and the acting state government of Eastern Equatoria to enforce security in the state to reduce cattle raid violence.
Lafon youth union strongly condemns the incident and calls on cattle raiders to stop such barbaric behaviors.
Within the last three months South Sudan has witnessed an increased rate of cattle raid as many well armed youth run loose in states without local governments.
At least 7 out of 10 states have experienced cattle related violence within the last three months and people have been killed.
In Juba, the Unity government is mostly focusing on fighting Coronavirus, a battle that is far from being won. Many politicians and military generals have succumbed to Wuhan’s virus and more cases continue to be established.
