Oct 8, 2019(Nyamilepedia) — A Canadian diplomat and author on South Sudan has bashed the South Sudanese leadership for failing to implement the security arrangement and for making no progress in resolving the deadlock over the number of states.
Ambassador Nicholas Coghlan, the first Canadian diplomat to be posted to the newest nation at a time many politicians in Ottawa could not locate South Sudan on the map, agrees with the main opposition’s leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, for opting out of a shaky coalition government that was to be formed in November this year.
“Machar’s reasoning is not wrong – absence of stipulated security arrangements in SouthSudan & deadlock over the # of states are critical failures.” The Ex-Diplomat tweets on his twitter account.
Having lived and studied the war mindsets and attitude of South Sudanese politicians, Ambassador Coghlan believes that some South Sudanese politicians would be gloating over his remarks and similar statements because those politicians believe that they have won the war.
“But there will be gloating by some who will believe they have now “won” the war (as if you can “win” a war that has cost 380k lives” Amb. Coghlan reiterates.

With his firsthand knowledge on South Sudan, Amb. Coghlan has authored a book on the new nation titled “Collapse of a Country”.
South Sudan conflict has displaced over 5 million people and caused death of over 400, 000 South Sudanese; however, the international community has done very little to end the war.
A call by the Human rights groups to establish a hybrid court to trial the politicians and military generals with support of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Norway have failed so far.
While the opposition leaders are not distancing themselves, Salva Kiir government wants to form a coalition government with smaller opposition groups turned allies but the United States and the United Nations are urging the parties to resolve the outstanding issues before forming a coalition government.
If the new Transitional Government of National Unity is not formed by November 12, 2019, this would be the second time the pre-transitional period would be extended which on other hand extends the term of office of president Salva Kiir and his group.
Mr. Kiir dived to power through party hierarchy when the late leader of the SPLM/A died in an air-crash in 2005 and since then one event has led to another leaving president Kiir with options to retain power.
