March 15th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The Canadian government has welcomed the formation of South Sudan’s long-awaited transitional government.
President Salva Kiir on Thursday formed the long-awaited unity government starting 36-month transitional period.
“Canada welcomes the announcement of a Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity in South Sudan,” the Canadian Global Affairs said in a statement seen by Nyamilepedia.
“The establishment of an inclusive government is an important step toward national reconciliation and sustainable peace in South Sudan, paving the way for democratic elections, respect for human rights, as well as economic and social development.
“We recognize the important compromises taken by President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar in this process and hope this marks a step towards peace for the people of South Sudan.
“Canada commends the efforts made to empower women, as demonstrated by their greater representation in the new government, even if the numbers fall short of the requirements of the 2018 peace agreement.
“Canada is a committed partner of the people of South Sudan, providing our support through development, humanitarian and peace-building assistance, including our military contribution to the UN peacekeeping operation in the country.”
