Jonglei State, South Sudan
February 8, 2022—A businessman was killed in a revenge attack by a group of armed men in Ayod County of Jonglei state on Saturday, authorities said.
In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia, the County’s Secretary General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party, Gabriel Tot Kai, says that the deceased Yoak Pham was gunned down by the assailants while at his Salaam Market’s shop in Ayod town on Saturday evening.
“He was killed within Sallam Market at 8 pm. Those who killed him are suspected to have come from Uror County. The deceased trader is also from Uror,”SPLM County Secretary Kai said in a statement.
The senior local official condemned the attack and said further investigations have been launched.
Mr. Kai said the reason for the killing remains unclear so far but he suspected his involvement in arrest of some cattle raiders in Ayod County last month might be the reason.
“The reason for the killing is not clear but he could have been targeted for involvement in the arrest of some cattle thieves in Ayod last month,” he said.
For his part, Major Tuor Majak, the state police spokesperson, said they are aware of the killing but that the details remain scanty.
