Oct 4, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei, the current world record holder emerged the winner of the London Marathon today, Sunday 4th April 2020.
She finished in just 2hours, 18.58 minutes, which is about five minutes outside her world record that she had set in Chicago last year.
Brigid said that the current London made her struggle throughout the race.
“The weather was not good so we struggled. I struggled up to the moment I finished. We have not prepared well due to the pandemic. I will be prepared for good results next year,” she said.
Sarah Hall came in Second as Ruth Chepngetich came in third place.
Leaders and Kenyans alike took to social media to congratulate Brigid for the win.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated the Kenyan contingent to the 40th #LondonMarathon for a good performance.
“The Head of State paid special tribute to Brigid Kosgei for defending her title in the road race saying she has made Kenya proud.” Read a statement at statehouse social media pages.
Deputy President, William Ruto, also shipped in his congratulatory message reiterating that the athletes made Kenya proud.
“Congratulations Brigid Kosgei & Ruth Chepng’etich for triumphantly defending your London Marathon title & emerging third in the race, respectively. Your endurance, mental strength, will-power & assiduity is a solid manifest that Kenya is home to the world’s top-ranking athletes.” Wrote the deputy president William Ruto.
Opposition leader, Hon. Raila Odinga, also congratulated the althletes for their outstanding performance.
“What an outstanding run, congratulations Brigid Kosgei on successfully defending your title and winning the #LondonMarathon. You have lived up to the strong Kenyan tradition in distance running. Keep going and keep inspiring. Hongera!” Wrote the opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The race, originally scheduled to be run in April, was adapted to 19.7 laps of St James’s Park rather than the traditional street route, and was restricted to elite runners only due to the coronavirus pandemic.
