Sept 27, 2017(Nyamilepedia) —— Briefing the Security Council on South Sudan, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Nikki Haley, assured the suffering populations of South Sudan that her government can no longer tolerate the inaction of the South Sudanese leaders, region and the rest of the international community.

The United States is concerned that South Sudan’s man made conflict has displaced over 4 million people, left over 7 million people in dire need of humanitarian assistance and hundred of thousands dead.

Amb. Haley said her government has recently imposed sanctions on some of the keys peace spoilers as the United States can no longer wait for collective decisions that are taking forever.

“The United States is not waiting to act. Earlier this month, we imposed economic and financial sanctions against individuals who have obstructed the peace process, denied access to humanitarian assistance, and interfered with the peacekeeping mission.” Said Amb. Nikki Haley

The United States urge the South Sudan’s warring parties to heed to calls for resuscitation of the Peace Process -warning that the High Level Revitalization Forum is the last chance to resuscitate the peace process and restore the conflict – or else the United States will be forced to take more actions on its own or with interested partners to end the conflict in South Sudan.

“This is the last chance at salvaging the peace agreement in South Sudan. The different parties to the conflict must use the next several weeks to commit themselves to this process and to conclude it.” Said Amb. Haley

“Our hope is that South Sudan’s leaders will seize this opportunity. If not, we must resolve now – both individually and collectively – to do more to end this conflict.” She continued.

Unlike the Obama’s administration, which was divided on South Sudan conflict, the new Trump administration is sadden by the slow response from the International Community, especially from the United Nations which has failed to impose sanctions and arm embargo on South Sudan.

“We’re disappointed this Council refuses to stem the flow of arms to South Sudan or to punish those who victimize their own people. Still, we know the real responsibility and power for change lies with South Sudan’s leaders. But so far, the Government of South Sudan has not responded to the pleas of this Council to create an inclusive government and put an end to the fighting. There a great deal of work left to do.” Amb. Haley said.

As a result, president Trump is sending his delegation to Juba, South Sudan, to deliver his message directly to the main warring parties, the government(SPLA/M-IG) and the SPLM/A-IO, after which more actions may follow if nothing is done to change the situation

“We are so concerned, in fact, about the deteriorating situation in South Sudan – and elsewhere in central and east Africa – that President Trump announced last week that he has asked me to go to Africa in October. While there, I will go to Juba as a representative of my government, but also as a representative to the Security Council.” Nikki continued.

“The United States will do what it can to reduce the suffering in South Sudan, and the Security Council and regional actors must do more. But our bottom-line message to the South Sudanese leaders will be that they seize this opportunity to take the initiative. But time is running short.” She added.

Nikki assured the people of South Sudan that the U.S has not forgotten them and that they have a friend and an advocate in the United States.

“As for the people of South Sudan, we look forward to delivering the message in person very soon that we have not given up on them and have not forgotten them. The people of South Sudan have a friend and an advocate in the United States of America.” Nikki said.

In Juba, Salva Kiir administration hopes that Nikki’s visit will present an opportunity to persuade the United States to remove the recently imposed sanctions and build better bilateral relationships between Kiir’s government and the United States.

“If there is anything that the U.S. wants, or to discuss among ourselves, the fact is that we have to sit and talk about it. And particularly the sanctions the U.S. Treasury imposed on our officials was not helpful to the peace agreement,” said Ateny Wek Ateny, President Kiir’s spokesman.

“When you look at the reasons for sanctioning the three officials, most of it is simply because they have done their constitutional mandate. It is a constitutional mandate for the chief of general staff to order an army to fight an insurgent,” Ateny Wek continued.

Although President Kiir sent his First Vice President, Taban Deng Gai, to the United Nations General Assembly to mobilize more support from the International Community, briefing from the UNMISS, JMEC and the U. N over stressed lack of commitment from the warring parties and doubts if Salva Kiir is ever serious on his initiatives.

Despite repetitive warnings from the U.S, U.N and other International Community, South Sudanese leaders continue to drag their feet to restore the conflict.

South Sudan conflict began in December 2013, and according to the United Nations, more than 17,000 children have been abducted or recruited into armed groups; more than 15,000 children have been pulled apart from their family and other loved ones; more than 1.1 million children face acute malnutrition, and barely half of school aged children are in the classrooms.
