July 27th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudanese military commander loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) has survived a deadly ambush near the Mayom county headquarters on Thursday, sources at the SPLA’s Fourth Infantry Division said on Friday.

Since the ongoing South Sudan civil war broke out in December 2013, deadly ambushes become familiar in the South Sudan conflict with both sides of the ongoing civil war claiming responsibility.

The ambush was carried out against the unidentified army general by an unknown assailants who are suspected to be cattle raiders from the neighboring Warrap state, President Kiir’s home state.

One source told the Nyamilepedia that the attackers were able to outnumber the general’s convoy of five pick up tracks and the general had to order that the convoy evacuate the scene of the deadly ambush.

“We were outnumbered. The attackers were many in number and we could not stand to fight them because we had a general without so we feared for the general and the commander himself ordered that we should flee,” he said.

The source pointed out that the ambush which he said has killed four of their soldiers and non from the side of the attackers was carried out by suspected cattle raiders from Warrap state because there has been an increase in similar cases in recent months.

“The ambush was by people I think are cattle raiders from Warrap state. These days, these people are actively involved in such activities in Northern area (Liech). They killed about four of our soldier and no one was harmed from their side according to my understanding,” he further revealed.
