
July 28th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government on Saturday arrested a prominent civil rights activist Peter Biar Ajak while leaving the capital Juba for Northern Bhar Al-Ghazal State Aweil, sources have said.
Biar, a prominent political commentator, a political analyst and youth leader has been a critic of the direction in which the country is headed.
Several sources told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon that the civil rights leader was arrested while leaving Juba. It is still unclear what crime he dead for the authorities to arrest him.
Biar is also a senior advisor at International Growth Centre (IGC) on South Sudan and is also the Founder and Director of the Center for Strategic Analyses and Research (C-SAR), an independent policy think-tank based in Juba, South Sudan.
Family call for release
In a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia, Deng Ajak, a brother of the detained civil rights activist called for the release of his brother saying the charges he was detained on its basis were still unclear.
“The charges and the motive for his arrest is not known. We, the concerned family members urged the arresting authorities to respect his rights and liberties,” the family said in a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia.
For his part, the South Sudan Presidential Press Secretary, Ateny Wek Ateny, told the Nyamilepedia that he do not have any knowledge about the arrest of the civil rights activist and as such he can not comment on it.
