Nov 8, 2017(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan’s former powerful army Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Paul Malong Awan, who also commands tens of thousands of Mathiang Anyoor militias, applies for UN protection through the UN Mission in South Sudan.

Gen. Malong stressed in his application for asylum that he would prefer to be allowed to go to his hometown of Aweil but given that his life is currently at risk, the former most trusted ally to President Kiir , calls on the United Nations to guarantee him immediate protection together with his bodyguards.

“I should be allowed along with my guards to leave Juba peacefully to my hometowm of Aweil”

“In the Alternative, I should be allowed together with my guards to seek shelter and asylum at any UN Camp in order to preserve my life and those around me” Said Gen. Paul Malong, a man who is being held responsible for massive displacement of civilians that forced UN to create Protection of Civilian Sites around the country.

Gen. Malong, who has been sanctioned by the United States and Canada for gruesome violations of human rights, calls on the United Nations, IGAD, TROIKA and the International Community to intervene with immediate effect to save his life and those of his bodyguards and security forces who are serving sentences in various prisons in the capital, Juba.

Reports from prison allege that three of Malong’s officers have already died from torture in the hands of their former colleagues and Malong now pleads for any assistance to get his detained officers freed.

Malong would prefer his detained officers released and allowed to go to UN camps outside the country but it’s unlikely his opponents will ever respond to his requests.

Since he was sacked in May this year, Malong has been held in Juba not far different from a prisoner of war, however, things have deteriorated relatively fast within the last 5 days after President Kiir issued a new order to mount more pressure on disarmament of Gen. Malong and few remnants of his bodyguards.

At the time of this writing the UN was yet to response to Malong’s application but it is yet to be seen how UNMISS will accommodate Malong and his soldiers alongside his immediate victims.
