Sep 16, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has fired his long-term financial ally, Hon. Salvatore Garang.
According to a presidential decree seen by Nyamilepedia, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning is fired amid economic crises and allegations of corruption and mismanagement of the finance and economic sector.
The minister was fired along with other finance and revenue officials that include the acting National Revenue Authority Commissioner-General, Erjok Bullen Geu, who has been acting under the table for more than a year.
The circumstances that led to the appointment of Erjok, and by who remains controversial, however, Erjok has been the NRA boss since late 2018.
President Kiir also fired the Nilepet boss Dr Chol Deng in the controversial decrees that do not justify the firing of these officials.
South Sudan economy is currently melting down as the currency is depreciating and South Sudan has no foreign reserves.
The Finance Minister has spoken up for the last two weeks declaring that there are no money to pay public servants and there could be no salaries for a few more months.
These officials were arraigned by the defunct parliament last week on economic crises; however, they told the lawmakers that the economy is collapsing and there is almost nothing they can do about it.
These statements and others are sending shockwaves across the country and fear of uprising and protests are high; however, this move by president Kiir may delay the protests.
