In a resignation letter submitted to the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity today, Hon. Odwar stated that his resignation will come to effect by midnight August 11/12 at exactly 2400 hr.

The Minister of Mining, who doubles as the deputy chairman of the SPLM/A-IO, has submitted at least two resignation letters to SPLM/A-IO chairman before, resigning from the party; however, he was persuaded by party members not to resign and was able to change his mind.

Although there have been criticisms on why he was appointed to a “lower ranked” ministry instead of Ministry of Petroleum or Ministry of Defense and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Odwar is a Canadian trained geologist by profession and has many years of experience in the same field from Canada.

On the other, Hon. Odwar has been battling a terminal illness that has forced him to spend times in Canada where he is seeking treatment.

Odwar has lived in Canada since mid 1980s and he currently lives with his family in Ontario, Canada; however, he has served his Ikotos constituency and people of South Sudan where he has spent significant presence since 2005.

Odwar rebelled against Salva Kiir government and joined SPLM/A-IO in November 2014. Today he is one of the few senior politicians who are still loyal to the First Vice President, Machar.
