August 5th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has relieved SPLM-IO governor of Adar state amid reported fighting between armed civilians and SPLA-IO forces in Maiwut.
“Pursuant to the April 15-18 2014 Nasir consultative conference, I Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/SPLA (IO), do hereby relieve Maj. Gen. Stephen Pal Kun Kek as the governor of Adar state with effect from 5 August 2019,” partly read the decree signed by Machar.
Although no reason has been given for his dismissal, analyst says Machar was forced to dismiss the governor over the fighting that has been a challenge to Machar and his group.
In a separate decree, Machar appointed Brig. Gen. Stephen Loma Yaka as caretaker governor.
For the last one week, fierce fighting has been reported between armed youth and the SPLA-IO in Maiwut after reports the governor ordered to disarm the youth.
