October 1st 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Fierce fighting has erupted this morning in the Central Equatoria town of Mundu following a government attack aginst rebel forces accroding to an SPLA-IO spokesman who said fighting was ongoing.
Col. Lam Paul Gabriel, SPLA-IO Deputy Spokesman said in a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia that the SPLA, South Sudan’s army, have attacked thier defensive position in Mundu, Yei River state in the Central Equatoria region.
“Clashes resumed in Mundu this morning the 01/10/2018 at about 8:00AM when the regime’s forces left Jamara centre and attacked the defensive position of SPLA IO in Mundu,” Lam said adding that “The fighting is still ongoing.”
He said similar fighting occured yesterday following an attack against their position by the SPLA on their position in Agana, a neighboring villageb also located in Yei River State after the government forces moved out of their barrack in Kendiri.
“Yesterday 30/09/2018, the regime’s forces in Agana heavily stormed the SPLA IO position in Kendiri making our forces to tactically move out of Kendiri. We believe that today the 01/10/2018, they will continue with their aggression,” Lam said.
He teh Yei river state incidents are isolated cases and call the regime to stop what he calls ‘anti-peace’ campaign and withdraw immediatelty from the areas they captured after the declaration of the permanent ceasefire and the signing of the revitalized peace agreement.
“The SPLA IO would like to consider this aggression in Yei River State as an isolated case but warns the regime to stop this anti peace campaign and withdraw immediately from Kendiri and Jamara. Otherwise an attack on any of our bases is an attack on our movement and will result to a swift response accordingly,” he further said.
The Nyamilepedia could not confirm and could not reach the SPLA spokesman for comment but if true, the new government offensive will be a blow to the fragile ceasefire agreement signed in June by President Salva Kiir and his arch-rival Dr. Riek Machar as well as the peace agreement.
