Fighting breaks out at Wau prison

July 13, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – Fierce fighting has broken out at Wau central Prison between prisoners and prison guards leading to the killing of one prisoner and wounding of three prison guards, sources with direct knowledge have said.

The fighting – one police source said from Wau – started at 2:45 PM this afternoon when three inmates were able to confiscate the guns of the four prison police officers leaders others to join the game among the prisoners.

The police officer who spoke to Nyamilepedia on phone from Wau said over 70 inmates have fled and that only 19 of them have been arrested again and said most of them remain in hiding and express fears that they may not be arrested again.

“There was fighting this afternoon at Wau Central prison, Seventy (70) people among the inmates have fled. Three of them took the guns from four officers leading to fighting,” the officer said.

Separately, the director-general of Wau Central Prison Major-General Peter Madut confirmed the incident and said some inmates have run away with some guns which they grabbed from the police.
