1st Lt Gen. James Ajongo Mawut died on Friday at the age of 64 in a military hospital in the Egyptian capital Cairo after lengthy illness battle.
He joined the SPLA in 1983 and was appointed its army chief in May 2017 after Kiir dismissed his predecessor Gen. Paul Malong Awan after reportedly having been suspected by the country’s security chief Akol Kor of plotting to overthrow president Salva Kiir.
Presidential Spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny told the Nyamilpedia on Sunday that the body of the late army chief will be flown to Juba on Monday and will be taken to his hometown Aweil for burial after prior consultations of the government with the family.
It is however unclear when his body will be flown to Aweil as state-sponsored prayers are due in the nation’s capital Juba before he is flown to Aweil where he is due to rest.
