February 5th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The African Union (AU) on Wednesday urged South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny to permanently relocate to the capital Juba.
Machar is however under detention in the Sudanese capital Khartoum as part of a regional conspiracy that began in 2016 to keep him out of South Sudan’s ongoing civil war.
In a communique issued this morning, the AU welcomed “the ongoing participation of Dr. Riek Machar in the implementation of the Peace Agreement, in particular his two weeklong stay in Juba, and encourages him to relocate to Juba permanently as part of the efforts to rebuild South Sudan.”
Machar who was in Juba last week in a bid to try to find a breakthrough with President Salva Kiir over the pending issues was expected in Juba yesterday when opposition officials said the visit was cancelled by the regional body, IGAD, which mediated the 2018 peace agreement.
He is expected to meet Kiir in Addis Ababa over the weekend on the sidelines of the IGAD summit of the heads of state and government.
