September 11th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat has commended President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riek Machar Teny, leader of the SPLM/IO, for holding a face-to-face meeting aimed at resolving outstanding issues impeding the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia, the AU boss said he is impressed by the commitment of the Parties to the agreement and urged the two leaders to continue to make further efforts to expedite the implementation of the stalled peace agreement.
“The Chairperson is encouraged by this demonstration of commitment by the two leaders to accelerate the implementation the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan,” Faki in a statement.
He appealed to the leaders of South Sudan to continue to hold a series of direct meetings and also bring non-signatories groups on board so that the peace agreement remains inclusive for all.
“The Chairperson urges the two leaders to continue holding regular discussions and extend participation to other signatories to the Agreement.” he stressed.
The continental body, the African Union, further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting South Sudan’s peace partners in their quest for peace and stability in the country.
“The Chairperson reiterates the African Union’s continued commitment to accompany the parties during this vital process,” he said.
South Sudan’s leaders have been holding closed-door meetings since Monday, aimed at eliminating critical pending issues that delay the implementation of the peace accord signed last year in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
