At Least 70 Confirmed Dead In South Sudan’s Lakes State Fighting

Dec 07, 2017(Nyamilepedia) —– Latest reports from South Sudan’s Western Lakes State confirmed that a recent ethnic feud in Northern Rumbek has left at least 70 people dead and more than 100 others injured.

According to the minister of information of Western Lakes State, Hon. James Riak Deng, 70 people were confirmed dead on both sides and more than 80 others suffered gunshots wounds.

“We have 70 people confirmed dead on both sides and more than 80 people sustained gunshot wounds” Said Hon. James Riak Deng, the Western Lakes State Minister of Information.

Local reports confirmed that 105 have been injured and 28 remain in critical conditions.

The deadly clashes were between two pastoralist clans of Pakam and Rup, and according to eye witnesses fighting ensued over grazing land and water around Mayom, Malek and Maper.

Without involvement from local government, the two clans were left to fight among themselves and displaced thousands of local residents from their homes.

Lakes state has suffered one of the major internal ethnic fighting in which hundreds are killed along tribal lines as Dinka sub-tribes fight one another.

South Sudan descent into lawlessness before its independent in 2010 and felt back to full-scale civil war in December 2013 when president Salva Kiir went after his opponents and critics in attempt to consolidate powers.

For the last 4 years, the young East African country has been rocked by violent and chaos as former rebels generals turned politicians go after one another leaving tribes to revenge and retaliate past events.
