August 11, 2016(Nyamilepedia) —– The Peace and Security Council(PSC) of the African Union met today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, just a day before the United Nations Security Council(UNSC) goes to vote in New York on South Sudan.
On August 12, 2016(tomorrow), the UNSC will vote on many life-saving decisions on South Sudan that include extending the Mandates of the existing UN Mission in South Sudan, deployment of a regional troop, arms embargo, sanctions and other tough measures to salvage the failing peace agreement and to protect civilians in the war-torn country.
In their today meeting in Addis Ababa, the African version of the UNSC, dubbed as PSC, did very little if not nothing, as some would say.
In a 3-paged communique, the Peace and Security Council endorsed earlier decisions made by IGAD-Plus and commended efforts of all concerned parties including JMEC and UNMISS.
The PSC expressed their disappointment and “serious concerns” over the outbreak of the conflict in South Sudan and calls for “necessary investigation” in order to bring perpetrators to justice.
“Once again, expresses serious concern over the outbreak of fighting that took place on 7 July 2016 in Juba, resulting in loss of lives, dire humanitarian crisis and other tragic consequences on civilians and strongly condemns human rights violations, including sexual violence against women and girls. Council calls for necessary investigations to be carried out, in order to bring the perpetrators to justice.” reads part of the communique.
The PSC Requests IGAD to update them on the decision of the regional Chief of Defense Staff after their meeting, which will take place tomorrow in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
They call on South Sudan leaders to have mutual trust and put their people above their power struggle.
The PSC will meet again next week to endorse the decision that will be passed tomorrow by the UNSC and any other favorable outcome that may emerge before their next meeting.
In layman Terms, the African Union and its commissions depend on the regions, superpowers like the United States and Western blocs such as TROIKA, EU and their allies.
In pratical terms, the most the AU and its commission can offer is an endorsement, litterally an acceptance of ideas, and contributions of poorly paid troops in the exercise of “soverignity”.
