January 25th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The United States government is not happy with South Sudanese parties forming the transitional government in February, a senior government official familiar with the American position said.

The government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit and several opposition groups are mandated by the revitalized peace agreement they signed in September 2018 to form what would officially be the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU).

The government would have been formed in May last year but because several provisions meant to be implemented during the pre-transitional period were still pending.

The parties had to extend for a November 2019 deadline which they didn’t met as well. They then decided to extend for February 2020.

The government said it will this time form the transitional government. Opposition groups said they will not be a part of the government unless several pending issues such as the formation of the unified army, police and national service are in place.

The agreement also provided for the resolution of the number and boundaries of states before the unity government formation.

The parties disagreed last week to determine the number of states.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia this morning, a senior government official said the American government has informed the administration of Salva Kiir in Juba and were informed that the American government was not happy about the formation of the revitalized government without the outstanding issues resolved.

“The Americans have said they don’t want the government in February unless pending issues are implemented,” the official said.

“I don’t know how it is going to look in February,” he added.
